Students will design their own recycling bins based on the needs of the school. At SDU we decided that we needed plastic/glass and paper recycling bins. Our intention was to collect enough recycled materials and turn them into recycling products to be shown in a future bazaar (Week 11). Students were divided into groups of around 4-5 and each group was responsible in decorating one of the two types of recycling bin. In total we had about 16 different bins. The bins were to be placed around the campus.
The second part of this was to have the kids design 2 posters: one to show what materials can and cannot be placed into the recycling bins (ex: plastic/glass bins we accept plastic bottles, food containers, glass jars (unbroken), plastic cups, etc), and the other poster to promote sustainability with the 3 R’s. Once students completed their posters, they will present their posters and learned material to different classrooms. Students will demonstrate their recycling bins and outline the importance of recycling. This was to be done in both Chinese and English.
Posters took a bit longer to complete as they needed assistance from the teachers and also to rehearse their presentation.
