The Boatworks Part 2

Here are a few shots of the “craftsman” building that has to be completed with the Boatworks.  The builder can build a wharf using the laser jig provided (1/8 dowels fit perfectly and allow vertical alignment), loading docks and a covered loading dock. 

I am really excited about this kit because the modeler has a lot of freedom and choice when building the wharfs/docks.  What I’ll do is build the second kit with a bunch of variations … I have been thinking about this for awhile so look out!

 

 

Lance Russwurm’s customized version of Phinny McGinny’s Garage

Lance built this great diorama of Joe’s Garage AKA Phinny McGinny’s Garage. He added interior details to the garage (even a pin-up girl!). Cars and models are his two hobby passions and he blends them both beautifully. The Shirley Temple billboard helps to set the era of the scene as do the glass top gas pumps. The White Rose signs add a bit of nostalgia as well. Enjoy the photos!

Wall Siding includes: small clapboard, board & batten and vertical scribed siding.

Resin & Metal Castings (pigeons {you gotta have pigeons on your roof top}, brick chimney, whirly bird vent, smoke jack vent, mailbox and various barrels and crates to add a cluttered feeling.

Tichy windows (the main building has positionable windows), doors, 2 street lamps, 6 lampshades and a fire escape make this a great looking structure.

Great Decals such as awnings, stripped scalloped awning and Shady Business Signs.

Laser etched fence jig on the back of the wooden cigar box the kit comes packed in. Enough scale fencing to create 50 scale feet of fencing.

Roofing is a combination of laser cut random shakes, corrugated metal, rolled and gravel roofing.

Also included are 2 tents and their wooden underframes that can be located away from the structure or attached to the main building.

The Boatworks

The Boatworks started off as a dream in the head of fellow modeller Greg Shinnie.  He thought he could take the Farmers’ Market and turn it into a ‘Surf & Turf’ kit with a few additions.  He did such a great kitbash we took it to a few shows and the Boatworks had so many positive comments we decided to make turn it into our second limited edition kit.

Greg also suggested that the kit come with wall shakes so that the modeller could decide to cover all, some or none of their walls depending on a particular prototype they might be trying to simulate. 

You’ll also notice the wall sign “R.G. Shinnie Boatworks”, I decided it should be named after the modeller with the creativity and inspiration behind the kit.

Flatheads Garage

The O-scale Flatheads Garage Kit is a new laser-cut scribed siding wood kit. The roof panel is scribed on both sides (the underside looks like a wooden ceiling the top side is marked for laying the rolled roofing material). Castings include: 4 plastic 55 gallon barrels by Tichy, 1930′s glass globe gas pump, 200 gallon oil drum, oil bunker, lamp post, roof vent and 2 gas cans. Windows and doors are highly detailed products from Tichy and include laser-cut window glazing. The billboard is easy to build with a templates. As always well detailed weathering and building instructions and colorful decals are included with the kit.

The kit also includes a customizable billboard (you can choose a different name other than Flatheads for you garage) Just email or call me with the name you want. As an added bonus, I’ll laser engrave your kit name on a custom wooden box. one is laser cut.

Does your layout need a Boatworks waterfront kit? The R.G. Shinnie Boatworks is named after Greg Shinnie the kitbasher who created the first prototype. Greg captured the feel of a waterfront/wharf scene that could be classified as a classic design.

The kit contains the following parts and innovations:

Clapboard Siding (also included are enough wall shakes to completely cover the building … if you are after a more prototypical marine building)

Customizable boat door openings are laser scribed on the wall sections to add variety and choice for the modeler. (NOTE: you can have upto 3 large boat door openings)

Dormers can be placed in different locations.

Wharf construction is made simple with a laser cut jig to hold pilings in place while you assembly 4 x 10 bracing and 2 x 8 deck bracing.

Resin & Metal Castings (12 seagulls {you gotta have seagulls by the shore}, a big tuna {the boat builders occasionally cast a line in the water when they test out the boats}, steam winch, 3 lightening rods, brick chimney, 2 smoke jack vents, gas pump, cleats, fire hose, life buoy, various barrels and crates to add a cluttered feeling.

A one piece cast resin block foundation supports the Boatworks. It is easily cut and modified when choosing you large boat door openings.
